Skyfish Farms
Natural Food. Next Door
Why Start Skyfish? Because we want to change the world.
The global food supply chain is too long, and too unsustainable. On average, "fresh" produce travels over 1,500 miles from farm to market, which increases cost, reduces shelf life, and reduces nutritional value by up to 45%.The USDA Economic Research Service estimates that the cost of food has risen 13% over the last 3 years. But price increases aren't the only problem. the US annual product loss due to spoilage (food that goes bad) averages 30% of the available food supply, every year. That's about $160 billion. Putting that into perspective, we could have fed another 300 million people last year. But we didn't. Because $160 billion worth of food went to waste; $100b of the wasted product never even left the farm.
If we could figure out a way to shorten the supply chain by growing food where it's being consumed, we could reduce food waste by over 50%, double or even triple shelf life, and provide the most nutrient dense (tasty) food on the market. We could solve food deserts in every urban area, and we could reduce the climate changing effects of traditional, industrialized agriculture.
How: Vertical, Urban, Aquaponics
Skyfish Farms wants to shrink the global food supply chain from an average of 1,500 miles to just 15. We will deliver truly fresh food picked the same day, which will have longer shelf life, lower transportation costs, and retain more nutritional value (tasting better!).We use vertical, indoor, soil-free aquaponics systems where aquaculture meets agriculture to grow a more sustainable future. We're testing multiple systems to grow the highest quality fresh organic vegetables and the most delicious fish in the world. We no longer have to design produce to be hardy, pest resistant, and over productive. GMO seeds aren't needed, and aren't used. Instead, we select heirloom varieties grown in optimal conditions for maximum taste and yield. They are simply some of the best tasting vegetables in the world.Because we grow in customized, soil-free conditions, we're able to use up to 95% less water, zero chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and no pesticides. Our fresh food is actually fresh, and 100% chemical free.
